The new criteria for earning points include vocational registration, recognized qualifications, remuneration, and up to three years of skilled work experience in New Zealand. 

It is crucial to understand that points can only be claimed from a single skill indicator, meaning they cannot be combined from different categories.

Skilled Job Offer

One constant in the revised SMC is the requirement for a skilled job or a job offer from an accredited employer in New Zealand. This requirement remains essential even for those claiming the maximum points.

A skilled job or the related job offer must meet specific criteria:

  1. Minimum Hours: The job must entail a minimum of 30 hours per week.
  2. Occupation Level and Compensation:
  • For ANZSCO Level 1 to 3 occupations, the compensation must be at or above the median wage.
  • For ANZSCO Level 4 to 5 occupations, the compensation must be at or above 1.5 times the median wage.
  1. Contract Type: The job must be secured under a permanent contract or a fixed-term contract lasting at least 12 months.
