Changes in the Residency System

New Zealand has always been a sought-after destination for skilled migrants, with the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa serving as a pathway for obtaining residence. However, a significant transformation took place as the SMC underwent substantial revisions effective from October 9, 2023.

The Transition: From 180 to 6 Points:

The previous SMC mandated applicants to accumulate 180 points based on various criteria such as job, work experience, qualifications, and age. However, the revised SMC dramatically reduces the threshold to a mere 6 points.

The new criteria include points for vocational registration, recognized qualifications, remuneration, and up to 3 years of New Zealand skilled work experience. However, it’s important to note that points can only be claimed from a single skill indicator, as they cannot be combined.

Skilled Job Offer

To qualify for the visa, you must hold a skilled job or have a job offer from an accredited employer in New Zealand. This condition remains applicable even if you are claiming the maximum points available. A skilled job, or the associated job offer, should meet the following criteria:

1. Entail a minimum of 30 hours per week.

2. Fall within either an ANZSCO Level 1 to 3 occupation, with compensation at or above the median wage, or an ANZSCO Level 4 to 5 occupation, with compensation at or above 1.5 times the median wage.

3. Be secured under a permanent contract or a fixed-term contract lasting at least 12 months.

The revised Skilled Migrant Category policy marks a significant shift in New Zealand’s approach to skilled migration. Despite the apparent challenges posed by the changes, it is crucial for potential migrants to acquaint themselves with the revised criteria.
