The resident visa under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) uses a point system, where applicants can gain points based on factors such as age, qualifications, work experience, and an offer of skilled employment.
This system helps ensure that those with the skills needed in New Zealand can be identified and invited to apply for residence. By focusing on these key factors, the SMC aims to attract individuals who can contribute significantly to the country’s economy and society.
The New Zealand Residence Programme: How Can You Apply?
The New Zealand Residence Programme (NZRP) sets residence goals established by the New Zealand Government to meet the country’s ongoing skills requirements and humanitarian commitments.
To obtain residence through the SMC, you must demonstrate:
- Skills to Fill Identified Needs: You have the skills to fill identified needs and opportunities in New Zealand.
- Ability to Transfer Skills: You can transfer those skills to New Zealand and connect with local needs and opportunities.
- Contribution and Settlement: You can contribute to and successfully settle in New Zealand.
SMC Residence: Step by Step
SMC Residence is a 2-stage process. The first is the Expression of Interest (EOI) and the second the formal application. While you can still submit an EOI, the selection is currently on hold until further notice.
Stage 1 – Expression of Interest (EOI)
The first stage is the Expression of Interest (EOI). EOIs that meet the prerequisites for health, character, English language proficiency, and age, and have a minimum of 160 points, may be selected and issued with an Invitation to Apply (ITA). You must be under 55 years old and have an offer of skilled employment with a minimum salary of $25.50 per hour to be eligible.
Stage 2 – Formal Residence Application
Upon receiving an ITA, you will have four months to submit your formal residence application, providing documentary evidence of all the points claimed in your EOI.
This stage involves thorough verification of your qualifications, work experience, and other claimed points. The application must be comprehensive, including all necessary documentation to support your claims and ensure a smooth processing of your residency application.
