Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

The resident visa under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) uses a point system, where the applicant can gain points from factors such as age, qualification, work experience, and an offer of skilled employment, as the basis.

The New Zealand Residence Programme: How can you apply for it?

The New Zealand Residence Programme (NZRP) contains residence goals set by the New Zealand Government to meet New Zealand’s ongoing skills requirements and humanitarian commitments.

In order to obtain residence through the SMC you should be able to demonstrate that:

  • You have the skills to fill identified needs and opportunities in New Zealand, and you
  • are able to transfer those skills to New Zealand and link with local needs and opportunities; and
  • are able to demonstrate an ability to contribute to and successfully settle in New Zealand.

SMC Residence: Step by step

SMC Residence is a 2-stage process. The first is the Expression of Interest (EOI) and the second the formal application. While you can still submit an EOI, the selection is currently on hold until further notice.

Stage 1 – Expression of Interest

EOIs that meet prerequisites for health, character, English language and age, and have a minimum of 160 may be selected and issued with an Invitation to Apply (ITA). You must be under 55 years old and have an offer of skilled employment, paying at least $25.50 to be eligible.

Stage 2 – Formal Residence Application

On receipt of the ITA, you will have 4 months to submit your formal residence application, providing documentary evidence of all the points that you have claimed in your EOI.
